DMK Enzyme Therapy Aftercare: What to Do First 72 Hours
By Emerald Beauty Studio | October 4, 2026
Quick rule for the first 72 hours: keep your skin calm and protected. Skip direct sun, sweating, steam, exfoliants, and active ingredients. Stick to a gentle cleanse, light moisture, and daily broad-spectrum SPF. In Chicago, that SPF matters even on “cloudy” days.
I do DMK Enzyme Therapy as a 90-minute, medical-grade facial designed to support oxygenation, collagen, and lymphatic drainage for tightening and clearing. Right after your appointment, your skin might look a little flushed or feel tight, and that’s usually part of the process. The goal now is simple: don’t irritate what I just worked hard to calm. This guide is the same advice I give my Irving Park clients before they hop on the CTA or head back toward the Kennedy.
First 24 to 48 hours: no heat, no sweat, no “let me just try” products
If you do one thing right after DMK, make it this: keep heat and friction off your face. That means no steam, saunas, hot yoga, or long hot showers where your face sits in the steam. I generally recommend keeping your showers lukewarm and facing away from the spray.
48-hour checklist (save this)
- Skip heavy makeup, especially full-coverage foundation.
- No intense workouts, spin class, or anything that gets you sweating a lot.
- No steam, sauna, or very hot showers.
- No scrubs, cleansing brushes, exfoliating pads, or peel-off masks.
- Wear broad-spectrum SPF daily, and reapply if you’re outside.
Chicago sun is sneaky, even into September. If you’re walking to a bus stop, sitting by a window at work, or spending an afternoon outside in Lakeview or Lincoln Square, SPF is non-negotiable. Pigment issues love freshly treated skin. I’d rather you protect your results now than try to correct avoidable irritation later.
And for my transit commuters: if you know you’ll get sweaty on your way home, keep a clean, soft tissue in your bag. Blot gently. Don’t wipe or rub, and definitely don’t hit your face with fragranced wipes.
Days 3 to 7: peeling rules, sun rules, and when to slow down
A little dryness or light flaking can happen after enzyme work, and it tends to show up once you think you’re “in the clear.” The biggest mistake I see is picking at skin or trying to speed it up with exfoliation. Don’t. If you peel, let it shed on its own.
My rule: hydration and sun protection come first. If you’re peeling, keep your routine boring for a few more days. That is how you hold onto that clear, tight look you came in for.
I generally recommend avoiding retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, exfoliating acids, and harsh acne spot treatments for 3 to 7 days. If you’re sensitive, take the full week. If your skin calms faster, you can reintroduce actives slowly, one at a time, every few nights. If you jump back into everything at once, you won’t know what caused the irritation.
Also, keep an eye on heat exposure. Even a long walk around Wrigley before a game, a packed patio in Logan Square, or a hot day on the train platform can bring flushing right back. Hat, SPF, and a little patience go a long way.
The simple routine I want you doing at home (and what to skip)
After DMK Enzyme Therapy, your routine should feel calm. No “tingle, ” no squeaky-clean cleanser, no experimenting. Think: gentle, light layers, and protect.
AM
- Gentle cleanser (no scrub, no acids).
- Lightweight moisturizer.
- Broad-spectrum SPF every single morning.
PM
- Gentle cleanse (double cleansing is fine if you wore makeup, just keep it gentle).
- Moisturizer, and stop there for a few nights.
If you booked with me because you were searching for facials near me, I want you to leave with results you can actually see, not a reaction you have to manage. Keep it basic for the first week, then we can build your actives back in thoughtfully.
If something feels off: when to text, call, or come back in
Mild redness, tightness, and a “worked” feeling can be normal right after enzyme therapy. What I don’t want you to ignore is prolonged swelling, blistering, unusual pain, or anything that looks like infection. If that’s happening, reach out right away. I’d always rather take a quick look than have you guess at home.
“She always puts me at ease, our conversations are insightful, I ALWAY leave more relaxed and refreshed than when I arrive.”
one of our regulars
I’m in Irving Park, and quick follow-ups are usually easy to work in for neighbors in Avondale, North Center, and Logan Square too. If you’re commuting in on the CTA or off the Kennedy, just tell me what your schedule looks like and I’ll do my best to make it simple.
Want to book DMK Enzyme Therapy? It’s 90 minutes, $160, and I’ll walk you through your aftercare again before you leave.

If you originally found me searching nail salon near me, manicure near me, or pedicure near me, you can also keep your self-care in one place. A lot of my regulars love that.
DMK Enzyme Therapy aftercare FAQs (real-life timing questions)
How long after DMK Enzyme Therapy can I wear makeup?
I generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before heavy makeup, especially full-coverage products. If you need something earlier, keep it light and breathable, and remove it gently that night.
Can I exercise or go to spin class after DMK Enzyme Therapy?
For the first 24 to 48 hours, I recommend skipping intense workouts and anything that makes you sweat heavily. Sweat, heat, and flushing can trigger extra irritation and sometimes pigment changes.
When is it safe to use retinol or chemical exfoliants again?
Plan on 3 to 7 days off retinol and AHAs/BHAs. If you’re sensitive, take the full week. When you restart, add back one active at a time, every few nights, and stop if you see stinging or extra redness.
Is peeling normal after DMK Enzyme Therapy and how should I care for it?
Light flaking can happen. Don’t pick, scrub, or force it off. Keep cleansing gentle, moisturize, and stay serious about SPF. If peeling comes with significant swelling, blistering, unusual pain, or anything that worries you, reach out right away.
How soon can I book another facial after DMK Enzyme Therapy?
I like to base this on how your skin calms down and what we’re working on. A safe starting point is to give your skin at least a couple of weeks, then we can set the right rhythm for your goals.
